Eating Disorder and Disordered Eating Support For Athletes
It can be hard to notice when your relationship with food has shifted, because restriction can look a lot like dedication. I'm a specialist eating disorder dietitian with NHS experience across children, young people and adults, and a background in sports nutrition. That means you don't have to choose between your recovery and your sport. I work online across the UK and in person in Cornwall.
Is your relationship with food getting in the way?
You might recognise some of these signs:
Strict food rules, or foods you avoid because they feel unsafe
Feeling guilty or anxious after eating
Feeling you have to "earn" food, or exercising to make up for it
Cycles of restricting and then eating a lot
Anxiety when training plans or mealtimes change
Spending a lot of time thinking about food, your body or "eating healthily"
If any of this feels familiar, you don't have to wait until things get worse to ask for help.
Please make sure you reach out to your doctor or GP if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms for advice and a physical health check.
How I support with eating disorders or disordered eating
Structured Nutrition Support
Building regular, adequate eating at a pace that feels safe, using psychologically informed, behaviour change approaches and nutrition education
Food Freedom
Gently reintroducing foods you have been avoiding, rebuilding trust in your hunger and fullness cues, working on flexibility and being able to enjoy food again.
Back to sport and exercise
Planning how nutrition fits alongside your training and recovery, so you can return to the sport you love with enough fuel to enjoy it.
Eating disorders can affect your physical health as well as your mental health, so your safety comes first. With your consent, I'll work alongside your GP for medical monitoring, and alongside a therapist or psychologist where that's helpful. If you need more support than I can safely offer as an outpatient dietitian, I'll be honest with you and help you find the right service, including NHS eating disorder teams.
If you're struggling right now, Beat's helpline offers free, confidential support: beateatingdisorders.org.uk. If you're worried about your immediate health, contact your GP, NHS 111 or 999.
-
No. You can book whether or not you've been diagnosed. As I am not a doctor, I cannot diagnose you with an eating disorder.
-
Yes. I'll only share information with your GP, coach or anyone else with your consent, unless there's a safety concern I need to act on.
-
This depends on you - I do co-create personalised meal plans with clients who would find it helpful. Alternatively, I can give portion size guidance or we can come up with clear realistic goals if you think that would work better for you.
